Few countries like Malta can live up to the expectation of digital nomads for many reasons. Luckily, the Malta Digital Nomad Residency allows digital nomads and expats to work remotely and live in Malta. 

Is there a digital nomad visa for Malta?

If you wish to enjoy a laid-back lifestyle in a Mediterranean island nation, you have to apply for Malta digital nomad visa. In June 2021, Malta opened applications for a special visa called Malta Digital Nomad Visa, alluring thousands of digital nomads from across the globe. The Short Stay Visa, the Long Stay Visa, and the digital nomad visa are the three options, but the digital nomad visa is viable if you wish to work and live in Malta for a longer time. 

How long can I stay and work in Malta with the digital nomad visa?

Unlike the other visas, this digital nomad visa allows you to stay for a year in Malta. Citizens from non-EU countries can apply for this program. The visa can be renewed at the discretion of the Maltese Government, given that the applicant still meets the set requirement. 

What are the Malta digital nomad visa requirements?

Here is the following set of eligibility criteria:

  • Proof of Income: a monthly income of at least €2,700
  • Proof of Employment: a work contract with a foreign-registered employer
  • Proof of partnership/shareholder in a foreign registered company
  • Proof of Freelance Service

What documents do I need to apply?

  • Valid Passport
  • Application Form N1 and Application for N2 (if you want to apply for your family member)
  • Application Form N4 
  • Letter of Intent
  • Employment Contract or proof of Self-employment
  • Documents in case of a freelancer
  • Bank Statement from the last 6 months
  • International Health Insurance
  • Health Declaration
  • Proof of Accommodation

Application process

The application process is simple. The process can be explained in the following four simple steps:

  • Gather the required documents
  • Submit the application 
  • Wait for approval
  • Collect your Nomad Residence Permit

The application fee is €300. If you intend to apply for your family member, you must pay an additional fee of €300. One important thing to note is that you must pass a background check. 

You must submit the application at the Residency Malta Agency online via email at nomad.residencymalta@gov.mt. The Maltese Government takes no more than 30 days to review your application. If your visa is approved, you can travel to Malta to collect your Maltese Nomad Residence Permit and settle in Malta as a digital nomad. Remember, you can renew the visa if you wish to. 

As a digital nomad, you are exempt from income taxes in Malta for the duration of your stay. So it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Malta is one of the countries offering tax-friendly digital nomad visas.
